Abstract

It is well-known that the inventio-phase is critical to the success of ghostwriting processes. In this article, we argue that personal narratives may function as privileged tools in the early stages of speech writing counseling. The argument is based on action research, carried out as counseling sessions in connection to Kvindernes Internationale Kampdag in Denmark in 2021. The article offers to main contributions. First, in relation to existing handbooks on speechwriting for others, the article presents a set of concrete tools that have considerable potential to improve processes of ghost writing even as they also raise certain challenges. Secondly, in relation to existing work on the forms and functions of narratives in rhetorical discourse, the article displaces the traditional focus on narrative from seeing narrative as something that affects an audience to seeing narrative as something that can facilitate processes of invention.
