Architecture as a Third Skin: On Space, Body, and Atmosphere

How should we understand the relation between spatiality and embodiment? This question is not just theoretical but also practical, not just conceptual but also existential, not just philosophical but also a question for architecture. In this article I will explore the relationship between spatiality and embodiment with the help of architecture and phenomenology. As the question about the relationship is both theoretical and practical, both conceptual and existential, I want to do justice to these dimensions to some extent through moving between, first, the imagery of architecture, second, the conceptuality of phenomenology, particularly how spatiality and embodiment relate to the concept of atmosphere, and third, some studies in the theory of architecture. Thus, this article is an explorative interpretation with the aim of articulating how the relationship between spatiality and embodiment could be understood in a way that is comprehensive, clarifying, and existentially relevant
