The Sublime is – When?
Lasting Moments from the Reading of Proust and Solstad.

Originating from the discourse on rhetoric in ancient times, the concept of the sublime has taken shape and been reshaped in various versions within different kinds of aesthetic and philosophical discourses throughout history. A noteworthy common denominator of those versions concerns the sublime as a concept for the kind of experience that suspends our cognitive abilities – at least for a moment. To a large extent, the discourse on the sublime in art is about inquiring into what takes place in such moments. That is also the topic of this article as it investigates the aesthetic experience of reading two novels, Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time [À la recherche du temps perdu] and Dag Solstad’s The Insoluble Epic Element in Telemark in the Years 1591–1896 [Det uoppløselige episke element i Telemark 1591-1896].
